I’ve had chronic diarrhea for over 3 1/2 months. After providing a third stool sample, the results came back positive for a C. diff infection. I’ve never heard of this and I don’t really understand how I contracted it.

I’m not someone who has been prescribed or has used a lot of antibiotics. I have not recently, or ever for that matter, spent a lot of time in a nursing home or hospital. I generally spend my winters in Mexico and I am considered to be in good to very good health. Now this infection? I’m baffled and a bit disappointed in the time it took to receive a diagnosis. I don’t know what life after C. diff looks like for me.

In February 2020 I was prescribed both clindamycin and cefalexin for a breast abscess. Three weeks after I finished my course of antibiotics, in March 2020, I started to have severe, painful abdominal cramping and diarrhea. Each day became worse and worse until I was up through the night and couldn’t be away from the toilet for more than half an hour.

It started with a rash on my back that I suspect started from the barber I was seeing.  Scratching it made it worse. I went to the doctor’s office and was tended to by a PA. It was decided that this infection should be treated with a broad-spectrum antibiotic.
