2024 C. diff Awareness Month a Resounding Success

November was a remarkable month for Peggy Lillis Foundation as we commemorated C. diff Awareness Month with a whirlwind of initiatives, events, and advocacy. Together with our supporters, advocates, and partnerships, we reached millions of new individuals, helping to spread C. diff awareness and taking steps toward our vision of building a world where C. diff is rare, treatable, and survivable. Take a look back at some of the highlights from C. diff Awareness Month.

6th Annual See C. diff Campaign: See C. diff Diagnosed

2024 C. diff Awareness Month Theme - See C. diff Diagnosed, highlighting the 4 Elements of Diagnosing C. diff Infections.

This year, our campaign theme was “See C. diff Diagnosed” and centered around the critical need for early and accurate diagnosis of C. diff. As part of this campaign, we highlighted the 4 Elements of Diagnosing C. diff Infections, ranging from patient history to imaging. The campaign underscored the need for a better understanding of C. diff diagnostic tools and equitable access, driving home that accurate diagnosis is the first step in treatment.

We were able to engage millions across our social media channels and website. Peggy Lillis Foundation CEO Christian John Lillis and several PLF Advocates were featured across several notable outlets, such as the CDC Safe Healthcare Blog, Pharmacy Times, and Medscape.

15th Annual Changing the Odds Gala

On Friday, November 8th, we held our 15th Annual Changing the Odds Gala at 26 Bridge in Brooklyn, NY. This year’s gala raised over $118,000 to support PLF’s programs, making it our most successful fundraising event yet. Over 150 guests joined us in honoring three incredible women and their

contributions to C. diff research, treatment, education, and advocacy: Dr. Denise Cardo with the Leadership Award; Dr. Jessica Allegretti with the Innovator Award; and Maryann Webb with the Advocate Award.

Alongside supporters, sponsors, friends, and family, we celebrated 15 years of momentous achievements. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this our most successful Gala.

Inaugural C. diff Scientific Symposium

On Friday, November 15th, we held our Inaugural C. diff Scientific Symposium. The virtual event brought together clinicians, scientists, nurses, pharmacists, industry professionals, and patients to intermingle and hear from 23 speakers for a day of collaboration and discovery. Ranging in topics from the Epidemiology of C. diff to Health-Related Quality of Life with CDI, attendees were able to hear updates on a wide variety of topics and learn about cutting-edge research, innovative treatments, and new prevention strategies.

A highlight of the day was hearing directly from patients who courageously shared their experiences through powerful testimonials. These stories provided clinicians with invaluable insight into the human impact of C. diff infections, helping bridge the gap between clinical care and patient needs. The success of this inaugural event exceeded our expectations, with robust participation and meaningful discussions that will undoubtedly drive the science of C. diff forward.

State of C. diff Town Hall

We closed out the month with our Annual State of C. diff Town Hall, an event that brought together experts, advocates, and community members to discuss critical aspects of C. diff and its impact. This year’s town hall featured an impressive lineup of presenters who shared their expertise on a range of important topics:

  • Dr. Stacy Kahn presented the state of C. diff diagnosis and treatment, offering insights into current challenges and advancements.
  • Dr. Kevin Garey highlighted new and upcoming treatments, showcasing innovative approaches poised to transform patient outcomes.
  • Dr. Jacinda Abdul-Mutakabbir discussed the impact of social vulnerability on C. diff infection (CDI) outcomes, emphasizing the need for equity in healthcare.
  • Carol Raye provided a moving account of the patient experience, shedding light on the personal toll of C. diff infections and the importance of patient-centered care.
  • Christian John Lillis presented the state of C. diff policy, outlining advocacy efforts and legislative priorities, including the Peggy Lillis C. difficile Inclusion Act.

This dynamic lineup fostered engaging discussions and left attendees inspired and informed. Hearing from such a diverse group of presenters underscored the multifaceted nature of the fight against C. diff and the need for collaboration at every level.
