SEE THE CONSEQUENCES OF C. DIFF.

This C. diff Awareness Month, Peggy Lillis Foundation is focusing on mortality, the human cost of C. diff. C. diff is a systemic infection that can lead to sepsis and death, and it kills 30,000 Americans every year.

RECENT MORTALITY STATISTICS

  • 80% of C. diff deaths occur in Americans 65 and older.
  • 71% of C. diff-related deaths occur in inpatient facilities.
  • 15% of C. diff-related deaths occur in nursing homes or long-term care facilities.
  • C. diff disproportionately* kills women (58%) and white people (83%).

  • *This is due to increased access to healthcare and greater exposure to antibiotics, nursing home care, and proton pump inhibitors.

Clostridioides difficile (or C. diff) is the most common healthcare associated infection.

C. diff causes nearly 500,000 infections every year

C. diff contributes to more than 29,000 deaths annually

While people over 65 are more likely to get a C. diff infection…

…anyone who is taking
antibiotics or has recently been at a healthcare facility is at risk

Yet only 30 percent of Americans have heard of this dangerous and potentially deadly disease.
