The surprising origin of a deadly hospital infection

PLF Scientific Advisor Vince Young, MD, PhD, was featured in a University of Michigan Medicine article on a recent study undergone by Dr. Young and fellow researcher Evan Snitkin, PhD, suggesting that risk for getting sick with C. diff may be more strongly associated with patients who are already colonized with the bacteria, rather than in-hospital transmissions.

Dr. Young is quoted, saying “we need to figure out ways to prevent patients from developing an infection when we give them tube feedings, antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors—all things which predispose people to getting an actual infection with C. diff that causes damage to the intestines or worse.”
