Call her a superhero in combating superbugs. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, the only microbiologist in Congress, does New York and the nation proud in fighting disease and advancing fiscal prudence at the highest level of public service.
Next month, for her continuing work to stop preventable disease and strengthen our health systems, Slaughter will receive the annual award of the foundation I lead, the Peggy Lillis Memorial Foundation. Some commentators, as Rochester writer Bill Wienert recently pointed out, wrongly downplay the danger of disease strains resistant to antibiotics. Louise Slaughter doesn’t.
